There is a growing realization amongst the lay TMD public that a majority of the dental professionals do not understand TMD because of their lack of understanding of key principles of occlusion and its relationship to the masticatory, temporomandibular, postural and central nervous systems. Some don’t believe occlusion has anything to do with myofacial/orofacial pain problems because their lack to comprehensive the intricacies and the delicate nature of this dynamic system. Because of this lack, conclusions are made, protocols and treatments are implemented and advocated to mask what has not been diagnosed. The profession talks about diagnosis, but they don’t know how to diagnosis “TMJ”, let alone treat it. The public gets it because of their astute insightfulness to weight the pros and cons of each philosophy, methods and beliefs within dentistry. The public is also frustrated and sees through the dental banter.
